Gretzky was a part-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and eventually served as the club’s head coach and head of hockey operations. He stepped down in September 2009.

Canada’s Sportsnet reported an American private equity firm — the Toronto Star identified it as Providence Equity Partners, which backs the Yankees Entertainment Sports Network — had reached out to Gretzky to be part of a group vying for a large slice of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

The Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan holds an 80 pecent stake in MLSE, which owns the Leafs, the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC of Major League Soccer and Air Canada Centre, among other sports and media properties.
